From Double-hulled Canoe to website

index.jpgkalia

index.jpgkalia (One of the ancient double hulled canoes, kalia, of the Tongans.  The ancient Lo'au Lineage, Ha'a Lo'au, were regarded as the masters in teaching double hulled canoe, kalia, construction, tūfunga fo'u kalia, and navigation, faiva faifolau, in the Lake-of-Fualu, Lepa-'o-Fualu, at Ha'amea District of Tongatapu Islands between the 10th and 17th Centuries.  Building kalia or canoe, pōpao, is one of the oldest skills of Moanan people, and it seems that the Ha'a Lo'au were among the skillful clans and experts in the area.  Kalia was bigger in size than pōpao, and the former was for long distant expedition whereas the latter was for short trip.  In Tonga, kalia was for heavy load and it could carry up to 300 passengers.  Small kalia was known as tongiaki, and six to seven people could travel on it in long expedition)

This establishment of the Lo'au University, LU, by the Lo'au Research Society, LRS, on this website, kupengaope, in hyperspace, vāvā, reminds us about the analogy of pouring old wine into two different bottles.  In this kind of analogy, the old wine is the intellectual movement of the ancient Lo'au Lineage, Ha'a Lo'au, which is now revived by the LRS, but it was carried from place to place in the past by kalia in the ocean, moana.

In this current situation, again we have the intellectual movement of the ancient Ha'a Lo'au in revival together with the modern intellectual movement of the LRS not in the kalia of the ocean but on this website in hyperspace.  Thus the LRS is working on a project of starting something totally new in Tonga history of education, that is, it starts the first University in Tonga and Moana not in the traditional way of compound in the homeland of Tonga but in hyperspace for the any interested individual worldwide.

In doing so, it allows any of its members to be part of it, be as a lecturer, student or admininstrator, from any part of the globe.  LU is an independent institute that does not actually locate inland but in the world of the internet, and this will give an open and wider opportunity to any student of the globe to become part of it.  There is no limitation indeed to the number of people in any part of the globe who would like to register and enroll in our LU.

Such a situation reminds us all about the modern notion of 'Global Village or Village of the world'.  LU is an institute of higher learning for people worldwide and not for a particular, race, district or country.

In ancient Tongan society, they had the kalia to carry the intellectual movement of the Ha'a Lo'au in the ocean from island to island, whereas we have today this website to carry the intellectual movement of both the ancient Ha'a Lo'au and the LRS respectively from place to place but in hyperspace.

Further, it was said also that some of the stone slabs that were used to build the Royal Tombs and other stone monuments during the Tu'i Tonga Empire (i.e.10th to 17th Centuries) were brought by overseas slaves from 'Uvea and Futuna Islands (Wallis Islands), and 'Uvea in the island of 'Eueiki (i.e. still controversial issue among academics), on the huge and imperial kalia of Lomipeau and Taka'ipōmana, among others.

They were belonged to the Tu'i Tonga Dynasty, and this includes another three well-known kalia of Hifoua by the Ha'a Ngata of Hihifo in Tongatapau and Tongafuesia and 'Akiheuho of Talaiha'apepe and Talatama, the two sons of Tu'i Tonga Tātui.

Tongans were well-known too for their skills and expertises in travelling long expeditions to peripherial areas of the Empire in searching for human and physical resources to take back to the centre in the capital of Mu'a.

Hūfanga Professor 'Okusitino Māhina whose doctoral thesis was written on the Tu'i Tonga Empire has recorded that Tongan warriors reached by kalia to distant islands such as Vanuatu, Rapanui and Tikopia.

Captain James Cook and William Mariner also talked in their writings about the amazing speed of the kalia, which could travel faster than the Western boats at the time.  Cook described that the kalia of chief 'Ulukala's from the Vava'u Group in the northern islands was faster than his.

Tongan oral traditions have also told great epic stories like the "Folau  'a Kae"/"Expedition of Kae", "Folau ki Pulotu"/Expedition to Pulotu and Folau ki he 'Uno 'o Sangone"/"Expedition for the Skin of Sangone" by Fasi'apule, Lo'au Tongafusifonua (second Lo'au, Lo'au Taputoka was the first) and other members of Ha'a Lo'au and the King.

The names of their kalia were not very known, but probably they were 'Akiheuho and Tongafuesia of Talatama and 'Akiheuho (Fasi'apule was the half brother of Tu'i Tātui, and Sangone was belonged to His Majesty but killed by the Samoans and buried its skin in Samoa under the witness of only one man Lafaipana).

As I said, Ha'a Lo'au were masters in teaching how to construct kalia and navigation, faifolau, in the Lake-of-Fualu beside their Ma'ananga residence at Ha'amea District in Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga.

The name Lo'au was clearly told and heard in the Folau 'a Kae and Folau ki he 'Uno 'o Sangone (Tu'i Tātui's turtle that was killed), and it is seemd that the latter journey was happened before the former.  With the Folau 'a Kae, Lo'au Tongafisifonua, Longopoa and the rest of the crew were all disappeared in a sea wreck except Kae who escaped home safely via Samoa and told the whole epic.

It was said that they were sailing towards the south of Tonga which is the direction to Aoteroa/'Aoloa through the white and sticky sea (i.e. snow by the interpretation of Professor Futa Helu and Hūfanga Professor 'Okusitino Māhina).  With Folau ki he 'Uno 'o Sangone, Lo'au Tongafisifonua, Fasi'apule and their crew returned safely back to Tonga from Samoa with the skin of Sangone, which happned prior to the Folau 'a Kae.

Overall, the teaching of tūfunga kalia and faifolau, together with the formation of kava ceremony which I discussed else where were the main well-known contributions of the Ha'a Lo'au with conjunction to the political system of ancient Tu'i Tonga Empire.

These constributions were made possible by the employment of kalia nationally and regionally  So there is a hope that this website, kupengaope, in hyperspace, vāvā, will play the same role as it was carried out by the kalia in the ocean, moana, during the time of Ha'a Lo'au and the Tu'i Tonga dynasty.
